Sun Studio-Birthplace of Rock-and- Roll
This picture taken on Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee. Sun Studio was a recording studio founded by Sam Phillips in 1950. Originally called Memphis Recording Service, it was here where the the studio laid claim as the birthplace of Rock and Roll. Blues and Rhythm & Blues artists like Howlin' Wolf, Junior Parker, Little Milton, B.B. King and Rufus King recorded here. Rock-and-Roll, Country Music, and Rockabilly artists include Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Charlie Rich, and Jerry Lee Lewis also recorded here.
A little tidbit was that Elvis Presley's contract with Sun Studio was bought out by RCA Victor in 1955 for the sum of $35,000. These monies were used mostly to pay off debts.
